About Jayleen Knowles
Welcome

I’m Jayleen Knowles, a registered Counselling Psychologist based in South Africa
For over a decade, I’ve worked alongside individuals and couples as they navigate emotional distress, relationship difficulties, trauma, loss, and significant life transitions. My work is grounded in the belief that healing happens through understanding, compassion, and the courage to turn toward what has been held within us.
I offer psychotherapy that is both professionally rigorous and deeply human — a space where complexity is welcome and where meaningful change can unfold over time.

My Story & Philosophy
From a young age, I felt a strong calling to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Over the years, that calling has evolved into a deep respect for the ways in which human beings adapt, survive, and grow — often in the face of considerable adversity.
Both personally and professionally, I have learned that adversity can be a powerful teacher. When experiences of pain or disruption are processed and integrated, they can lead to greater self-compassion, emotional depth, and a more authentic relationship with oneself and others. When left unresolved, however, they often show up as anxiety, depression, emotional disconnection, or a sense of feeling “stuck.”
I believe that the quality of our thinking and awareness profoundly shapes the quality of our lives. Even small shifts in perspective can create meaningful ripple effects across the mind and body. Therapy can provide the bridge that helps facilitate these shifts — particularly when long-standing patterns feel entrenched or difficult to change.

My Approach
My therapeutic approach is warm, evidence-based, and depth-oriented. I work relationally and collaboratively, drawing on a range of psychological frameworks including depth psychology, trauma-informed practice, somatic awareness, and inner child work.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, I aim to understand the underlying emotional roots, relational patterns, and unconscious processes that shape how you experience yourself and your world. Sessions are paced with care, offering a safe and containing space for reflection, emotional exploration, and integration.
I work primarily with teens, adults and couples, supporting concerns such as:
-
Anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm
-
Relationship and attachment difficulties
-
Trauma, grief, and unresolved past experiences
-
Psychosomatic and stress-related symptoms
-
Addiction and maladaptive coping patterns
-
Identity questions, life transitions, and existential concerns
-
A desire for deeper self-awareness and psychological growth

Working Together
I offer psychotherapy in selected towns in the Western Cape, as well as online therapy for clients in South Africa and internationally.
If you’re considering therapy and wondering whether this might be the right fit, I invite you to reach out. Beginning therapy can feel daunting — you don’t have to do it alone.
Qualifications
And Expertise
Professional Training
I hold both an Honours degree in Psychology (Cum Laude) and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (Cum Laude) from the University of Johannesburg. During my training, I worked at Headway Gauteng, supporting survivors of acquired brain injury and their families, and trained at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital. I completed my internship at the Centre for Psychological and Career Services (PsyCaD).
HPCSA
As a licensed Counselling Psychologist, I am committed to upholding ethical standards and employing evidence-based practices to support clients on their psychological journeys.
Experience
I have experience in a range of therapeutic approaches, including BWRT, CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic and Jungian principles, Gestalt therapy, and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. This integrative foundation allows me to work flexibly and effectively with teens, adults, and couples.
Since 2014, I have worked with clients across a wide range of concerns, including trauma, abuse, brain injury, relationship and family difficulties, self-esteem challenges, and life transitions.
Assessment
In addition to psychotherapy, I have experience conducting numerous psychological assessments and compiling comprehensive reports in areas such as psycho-educational assessment, concessions assessment, career assessment, and subject and career choice.

Research
My academic background is grounded in Positive Psychology. Both my Honours and Master’s research explored psychological well-being and resilience. My Master’s research, “The effect of a positive psychology intervention on the psychosocial well-being of a group of early adolescents,” examined whether a targeted intervention could increase well-being and reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms. The findings were encouraging and reinforced my interest in integrative, strengths-based therapeutic approaches.
I presented this research at the 8th European Conference of Positive Psychology in Angers, France, and at the 22nd South African Psychology Congress in Johannesburg.
Publications
In 2017, I contributed a chapter titled “DAISY: From dissociation to resolution using an integrative approach to working with children” to the book The Art of Psychotherapy: Case Studies, Processes and Techniques. The chapter explored the effectiveness of an integrative therapeutic approach through the case of an eight-year-old survivor of sexual abuse.
